Artist Statement

My 'Hidden Histories' art works are derived from my own interest in the stories behind iconic buildings and landmarks and are created by a layering technique.

Faced with the challenge of not only producing an accurate artwork of my subject matter, I set myself the task of ‘building in’ the story of its history too. From list-making, researching and sourcing visual references and then applying a layer of colour, the Hidden History is created. A number of black and white images significant to the history of my subject are pasted on to the original sketch and as coloured pastel is then applied, they, the Hidden Histories, become concealed. This unique quality adds a new depth to the illustration, and has proved popular with my customers and followers who are encouraged to look deep 'within' the illustration to discover them.

Once the art work is complete all the individual Hidden Histories are listed and documented with their own description and relevance and printed out as A4 documents which are packaged and sold along with the print. All framed pieces include the written work attached to the back of the frame in a labelled envelope and all listed Hidden Histories are now printed on the backs of all greetings cards.

My work allows me to be part of some of the most exciting ventures, such as the redevelopment of The Crescent Spa Hotel in Buxton. In 2020 I was asked to supply the hotel with 100 framed prints, together with a commission of the stunning Assembly Rooms, the original of which now hangs in the reception area. During my time there, I gained insight into the rich history of the building, the work that had gone into this much anticipated renovation and the skills and craftsmanship involved in this massive project.

A request to illustrate the Fernilee Methodist Chapel in 2021 introduced me to a team of committed individuals, all passionate about saving this iconic Wesleyan chapel. Local to me at the time, I was given access to historic documentation and information about the chapel, and from the original art work, 150 mounted prints were sold to raise money for the cause and invitations to the Chapel's 150th Anniversary celebration printed. The Fernilee Chapel has successfully been saved and renovation work on the building has commenced.

Over the years I have been commissioned to produce Hidden History Illustrations of family homes, wedding venues, places of special interest and meaning such as landscapes, even student accomodation and holiday homes.

Every space has a story to tell!
