Terry Baker - 30

Location: Buxton / Genre: Digital art and photography

Artist Statement

Terry is an artist and photographer who, through a combination of both disciplines, produces digital artwork deeply influenced by the School of Surrealism. His inspiration comes from the work of Max Ernst, Salvador Dali and Yves Tanguy. He is also fascinated by recent concepts in physics and astronomy and seeks to introduce aspects of these into his work.

He graduated with a BA in Fine Art from the Metropolitan University of Manchester, subsequently studied for an MA in Photography at De Montfort University, Leicester, and is an Associate of the Royal Photographic Society. Having taught art and photography for 30 years, he now works full time on his art in the Peak District National Park, UK, where he has a small studio.

Terry’s unusual work derives from his own extreme close-up photography of highly textured surfaces. The photographs are taken through a series of physical manipulations, including tearing and burning with heat and acid, and then combined with other materials to create small collages. These in turn are re-photographed on a copy stand to produce large, high resolution files which undergo extensive and complex editing in Photoshop.  The final images, being digital files, are printed in limited editions of various sizes.

Terry’s aim is to produce dreamscapes that are full of curiosities, creatures and alternative worlds; dreamscapes that cannot exist outside of the random wanderings of the subconscious mind.

A good definition of Surrealism.
