Artist Statement
Drawing the human figure has always preoccupied me. The studies are initially worked into with a variety of media. These don’t always work, but ideas emerge subconsciously as I think on paper and fabric, searching for media that connect with me and are also suited to the work. The fascinating textural qualities produced by manipulating, layering, and stitching cloth are endlessly explored.
My method of painting with thread and cloth is to hand dye transparent fabrics and group them in all their various hues around me as I work. This palette of colour is layered together, giving depth to the image. Repeatedly stitching over these layers disrupts the surface, creating a 3D effect unachievable by paint and traditional graphic media alone.
Parts of the work are meticulous in detail, other areas are more spontaneous and fluid, the contrast is vital to the work. I aim to distil and simplify the image.
I worked for over ten years as a fashion designer and have been freelance as an artist for over forty years.
